A former member of Students for a Democratic Society and the Revolutionary Union talks through his experience of growing Black Power and national liberation movements as a part of the general struggle for democracy.

We stand for the construction of a mass socialist party in the United States, united around a program of revolutionary democracy and political independence from all capitalist parties.

To do MUG is to look at disillusionment and say, “We have a tool for that.”

What is the relation between parliamentary deliberation and member rule? What does member rule mean, in practice?

How do we communicate our politics in the irony-poisoned world of the closing digital commons?

What does it mean to be a democratic socialist in a constitutional regime engulfed by bureaucratic civil war?

Our task is to merge socialism and the workers’ movement.

What is missing, however, is programmatic unity—unity around acceptance of a common, democratically-decided program which can unite the various factions of the movement and the diverse tactical struggles socialists engage in around a broad historical narrative and strategy. 

Strategic discussion must be explored in frank, sharp, and honest terms.

Are we really so sentimental? Well, maybe, but we’re not crazy. There’s something real that we’re grasping towards, something important.

Why does MUG love debate so much? What is protagonism? Who counts as part of the proletariat? Who is the vanguard of the proletariat?

As the dust settles on the 2024 elections in the United States, the prognosis is grim.
